The Great God Contest: A Christmas Parable

One day all the gods got together to see who could come up with the best plan for saving the world.

God #1 said: “I shall teach people how to escape the wheel of life and achieve nirvana. Not many will attain that state, but the attempt will  keep them busy and out of trouble.”

God #2 said: “I shall give the world a brand new holy book which builds on but supercedes the older scriptures. Plus, I shall enclose my central mystery in a big black box.”

God #3 said: “I shall give people many, many divinities to choose from—a god for every occasion.”

God #4 said: “I will not give the world another religion. Rather, I will show them that they don’t need to do anything except open their eyes to reality.”

Finally the last God of all spoke: “I shall give them Myself. I Myself will become human, and I shall die for all people in order to show them My love. And everyone who believes in Me will receive a free gift of eternal life.”

The other gods were horrified. “No!” they cried. “Your plan is a betrayal of the very nature of godhead. It would put the rest of us to shame. Surely You would never do such a thing.”

But Yahweh said, “Just watch Me!”

Even as He spoke, a new star appeared in the sky, followed by the cry of a baby.
